Watch What You Say

Week 1 – The Power of Words by Pastor Mark Cowart

Proverbs 18:20-21 (KJV): A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled. Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

This verse can also be read as follows: Death and life are in the jurisdiction of the tongue.

Sometimes believers wrongly believe that “I’m a new creation in Christ,” so anything can come out of my mouth and it is okay. That is not the case. The words that you speak are being monitored by the spirit realm.

Even when we say seemingly harmless things like “I’m so busy,” we are reaping the fruit of those words. The words that you speak moment by moment throughout the day are either accomplishing warfare on your behalf and advancing the Kingdom of God, or they could be creating your own ungodly warfare and your own difficulties.

Your tongue is neither righteous nor unrighteous. Good nor evil. But it can be utilized by evil.

James 3:8-10 KJV: "But no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!"

You can use your words to move mountains or to dig graves. Even if you don’t understand these laws, you are still reaping what you sow with your words. We are created in the image of God. When God created the universe, “He said…” He built the universe with His Words. (Genesis 1)

We are at a great advantage because we are redeemed; we have the Holy Spirit and the whole armor of God. We can have all of these things in redemption, but we can still be easily overcome if we do not watch what we say.

Psalm 103:20 (NKJV): Bless the Lord, you His angels, Who excel in strength, who do His word, Heeding the voice of His word.

The spiritual realm is activated by words. It is the Word of God that should be coming out of our mouths.

I have seen people’s lives cut short because they would not control their words. I have also seen where people may have had a diagnosis or something spoken over them, but they refused to believe it and would not speak it over themselves. We also must realize that we are unleashing the destroyer in our own lives when we complain.

1 Corinthians 10:10 - nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer.

Put it into practice: Watch what you say. Begin to notice how often you speak words of life and how often you find yourself speaking negative words. Shut down the negative words and instead speak life over the situation. Do not agree with the enemy and unleash the destroyer through complaining.

Pray this over your life: I pray a quickening of the Holy Spirit. Lord, I thank You that Your Word will not return void. Help me, Lord; I know I cannot do this without Your Holy Spirit. Help me to guard over what comes out of my mouth so that I may speak words of life and blessing. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen!
