Good For Nothing Christians!

by Pastor Mark Cowart

Salt has been a preserving agent for all the centuries before refrigeration and beyond. By its chemical properties in sufficient concentration, it inhibits microbial growth (spoilage) in meat. Jesus called His followers “the salt of the earth,” meaning our presence is mean to bring His presence everywhere we go. Pushing back the darkness that will begin to cover any society that is left unchecked.

The moral decline we are witnessing in America today is a result of the weakening of the “saltiness” of American Christians. So many have become complacent and lethargic while enjoying our blessings. As a culture, we have become intoxicated with prosperity and then lost our focus and closeness with the Lord. We lose our saltiness by being conformed to the world, just floating along with the flow of cultural norms. The corrupting inclusion of worldly elements within the Church, meant to be more “welcoming” and “accepting,” has diminished our effectiveness against the powers of darkness. In many places, the Body of Christ is out of step with His Holy Spirit.

What can be done about this?
We must maintain our close connection with Jesus by prioritizing prayer and the study of His Word in our everyday lives. We must allow the truth of God’s Word to be our ultimate authority. At the same time, we must be aware that the enemy is producing spiritual “junk food.” Lies masquerading as truth that will only cause confusion. By giving God the first part of our time, we can walk in His discernment against this trap.

Not only that. By abiding in the vine, we get re-salted, our saltiness renewed by His Spirit flowing through us and out of us.

REFLECT
1) Have you gone along with the flow of culture in some areas and drifted away from God?
2) If you look, what indications might you see that you’re losing your “saltiness”?
3) How can you intentionally set yourself up to be in step with the Holy Spirit?

PRAYER PROMPTS
1) Pray for discernment to see the distractions and cares of this world choking out your fruitfulness and uproot them, breaking their power in your life in the Name of Jesus.
2) Ask the Lord for the anointing of His Spirit to break every yoke, destroy every bondage.
3) Seek the Holy Spirit for empowering and anointing to move forward as salt and light everywhere He leads you.
